Booming Construction Regions Seek To Bridge Labor Gap

The fastest growing markets for construction jobs in the United States and construction companies say they are struggling with a shortage of qualified workers as the industry rebounds from the Great Recession.

Consider Western Michigan. Ottawa County is the nation’s 19th fastest growing labor market for construction jobs with a 13 percent growth rate in the past 12 months, according to statistics gathered by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

The four-county Grand Rapids-Wyoming area is tied with Flint as the nation’s 22nd fastest growing market for construction jobs with a 12 percent growth rate.

In Ottawa County, contractors have added 600 new jobs in the past year, raising the number of construction jobs to 5,300, according to the ACG statistics.

In the Grand Rapids-Wyoming labor market, contractors have added 1,900 new jobs in the past year, raising the number of construction jobs to 17,400. The Flint labor market has added 500 new jobs, raising the number of construction jobs to 4,700.
