**Job Summary**

AECOM is seeking a motivated, self-directed aquatic ecologist/environmental planner to support a diverse portfolio of environmental projects in Western Canada and The North. The position will primarily provide environmental assessment and permitting services for AECOM projects, including linear development and infrastructure (roads, bridges, and pipelines), remediation, renewable energy, and industrial sites.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

+ Leading fieldwork for baseline aquatic assessments to support environmental assessments and permitting, including travel to other provinces and territories

+ Writing fish and fish habitat reports and contributing to environmental assessment reports

+ Preparing permit applications and obtaining approvals under provincial (Alberta Water Act, Public Lands Act, and Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act) and federal (Fisheries Act and Navigation Protection Act) legislation

+ Providing strategic regulatory advice to help complete projects on time and on budget while remaining in compliance with environmental legislations, regulations, and best practices.

+ Liaising with provincial and federal regulators during the permitting, construction, and post construction phases of projects.

+ Authoring water quality monitoring plans and recommending mitigations for instream work

+ Conducting construction monitoring during instream works, including water quality monitoring

+ Conducting fish rescues

+ Leading meetings with clients and AECOM personnel to discuss permitting and environmental issues

+ Preparing scopes and budgets to support proposals for work

+ Participating in and creating health and safety plans for environmental work

+ Collaborating with biologists in other provinces

+ Supporting other business lines—including remediation—with field work, permitting, and reporting

**Minimum Requirements**

+ Bachelor’s degree in science with experience in aquatic ecosystems

+ 3+ years of experience, including aquatic assessments, water quality monitoring, and permitting

+ Professional Biologist (P.Biol.) designation in Alberta or eligibility for designation

+ Knowledge of Alberta provincial (Alberta Water Act, Public Lands Act, and Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act) and federal (Fisheries Act and Navigation Protection Act) legislation

+ Experience obtaining permits under the legislation listed above

+ Willingness work independently and collaborate with staff in other offices across Canada

+ Willingness to travel for field work, including to remote sites in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut

+ Experience with a variety of aquatic sampling techniques and equipment for fish and invertebrate sampling

+ Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ M.Sc. in an aquatics-related discipline such as fisheries biology or aquatic ecology.

+ Understanding of intermediate statistical methods to assess human impacts and natural variability in aquatic systems

+ Familiarity with engineering terminology and interpreting design drawings

+ Electrofishing crew lead certification
