About this Opportunity
As a Conformance Engineer, you'll apply basic engineering principles, concepts, theories, and techniques in support of business objectives in a developing capacity and under direct supervision. You may also provide fundamental engineering leadership and expertise. You may conduct feasibility studies, determine manpower and cost estimates, and develop engineering criteria. You'll perform primary analyses to develop design options or recommendations for structures, systems, and components. You may also apply originality, ingenuity, and knowledge of other disciplines in solving basic technical issues. Emphasis in your work will be placed on your team participation, ability to plan, and ability to achieve results on assigned projects.

  • Oversee the creation, implementation, and maintenance of the conformity assessment process for products against industry standards and customer specific specifications.
  • Perform conformity assessments as needed to support the publishing of declarations of conformance (for various specifications such as BIFMA, CAL, etc.).
  • Ensure that the conformance needs of Herman Miller’s present and potential customers are understood and addressed within product performance criteria.
  • Maintain and, where necessary, update a comprehensive set of tests and acceptance criteria to ensure product safety, product quality, and conformance information for global markets.
  • Ensure the validity of product performance criteria through the evaluation of marketing requirements, customer feedback, field research, competitive product performance, and the application of experience.
  • Continuously improve product performance tests and criteria to capture learning, enhance product performance, decrease warranty, and increase customer satisfaction.
  • Create complex test plans to evaluate a wide range of products for ensuring conformance to industry standards while minimizing testing costs and time.
  • Take good notes, showing your work and assumptions.
  • Use originality and ingenuity to apply solutions.
  • Apply basic engineering skills to your work assignments.
  • Apply basic problem-solving skills and execute solutions to basic problems.
  • Apply basic supply chain cost, value stream capabilities, and economic principles.
  • Complete engineering tasks under the direction of leadership.
  • Follow engineering and quality processes.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
  • Seek and receive mentoring from senior level and Engineering leadership.
  • Seek the approval of the budget owner using the appropriate request process.
  • Work under direct supervision. Your work will be reviewed after completion to evaluate the soundness of judgments involved.

You might be just who we're looking for if you have...

  • An Engineering/Technical degree from an accredited program or two-year Technical degree in a related field with three years of applicable engineering experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience with furniture testing, measurement techniques, and related technology.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and data analysis applications.
  • Experience assessing products and concepts and defining test methods, acceptance criteria, and test plans to verify their capability/conformance.
  • Zero to two years of professional Engineering experience.
  • Exposure to project management concepts (may be essential for some assignments).
  • Basic knowledge of Lean principles and their application.
  • The ability to assess process concepts and determine where continuous improvement opportunities exist.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with people at various levels, including Production, Engineering, and Management, and the ability to work well with and develop a partnering relationship with other team members.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of common office automation, communication,  and engineering-related software.
  • Basic problem-solving skills and the ability to apply engineering expertise to solving problems.
  • The ability to effectively react to changing priorities and workflow at the direction of leadership and the ability to anticipate, recognize, and respond effectively to changes which affect project plans.
  • An overall basic business sense and an understanding of how decisions impact business results.
  • The ability to perform all essential job functions of the position with or without accommodations.
