Reports to: Studio Leader / Managing Director

Leads: Design team through all phases of interior projects including guiding, advising, and mentoring other designers on projects, developing design direction, and leading design critiques/forums

Other Key Relationships: Clients, Studio Directors, Project Managers, Consultant Teams

We’re looking for a Design Leader who will take the design dialogue in our office, and City, to the next level - someone who thrives in evolution, and passionate about growing multiple facets of what we do, and how we do it.

Design Director

Gensler is organized around a highly collaborative studio leadership model, reflecting its core values and working style. Design Leaders work in concert with other colleagues to achieve goals related to project quality and process, while satisfying client requirements—a hallmark of all Gensler projects.

Design Leaders play a major leadership role by orchestrating the work of project teams focused on design, development, and delivery of outstanding solutions for the many dimensions of client work. At Gensler, we expect the Design Leader to have complete ownership of the design concept.

Design Leaders are involved with projects from the initial marketing stages through completion of construction and installation. During the life of a project, a Design Leader will work directly with the client, team members, and a wide range of consultants and collaborators, both internal and external. In addition to direct project involvement, Design Leaders have responsibility for building and sustaining client relationships.

As a member of a studio’s leadership team, Design Leaders will collaborate with other practice leaders across the firm to enhance Gensler’s culture for design excellence, elevate the quality of design, and achieve recognition for clients and the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the creative effort with interior design teams on projects and provide team guidance and mentorship
  • Assist in managing client expectations and realizing client goals and objectives
  • Championing excellent team communication and consultant coordination as necessary to support the design effort
  • Collaborate on commercial interiors projects, including programming of client needs and developing programming reports; developing test fit plans, conceptual concepts, schematic, and design development; provide management oversight of budgets and schedules as they relate to the project at hand
  • Develop finish and material selections
  • Provide knowledge of local material resources, suppliers, etc.
  • Participate in business development and marketing efforts when needed with other senior staff members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or Architecture, LEED accreditation a plus, and 10+ years of diverse interiors experience, including experience in a leadership role
  • Ability to work in a team environment with strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent presentation abilities, both graphic and verbal
  • A mix of strategic and creative bent, with ability to create great form while embracing sound business strategy
  • Passionate about design and able to be the design inspiration for multiple highly creative project teams
  • Experience directing and providing leadership for design teams from business development presentations through developing strategy and design concepts
  • Strong leadership, organization, communication, and relationship management skills
  • Ability to provide critical review to design teams, quickly communicating design ideas and direction
  • Demonstrated success building, nurturing, and fostering new client relationships
  • Ability to work closely with Design Leaders across the firm to promote an inter-disciplinary design approach and philosophy, and to facilitate its advancement across the firm
  • Proficient with Revit and other computer design programs, such as AutoCad, Illustrator, Photoshop, SketchUp; 3ds Max a plus
