About this Opportunity
As an Operations Manager - Veneer working at Geiger, you'll be responsible for leading, managing, and setting strategy for the Veneer Department and veneer procurement. You will manage a team to achieve operational objectives (in such areas as safety, quality, reliability, cost, continuous improvement, supplier development, and employee morale), which align with and promote the achievement of the Operations, Supply Management, and corporate business strategy. This work will be accomplished through the effective use and support of the Strategic Sourcing, Cost Targeting, Supplier Performance Planning, Supplier Development, and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) processes. Your results will be achieved through effective coaching, planning, organizing, implementation, and execution.

  • Ensure team members understand expected results and the work processes required to achieve those results.
  • Achieve agreement with the supplier on current cost elements based on facts observable on the shop floor. You will use an understanding of the Herman Miller Performance System (HMPS) to build targets for future attainment.
  • Provide cross-functional leadership in the process of conducting strategic sourcing.
  • Demonstrate the application of Lean manufacturing via the HMPS philosophy and tools. You will coach the Plan, Do, Check and Act (PDCA) process and implement, without coaching, change-over, standard work, and material and information flow to highlight problems.
  • Ensure the 100% on-time delivery of quality products to the customer by providing strategies and removing obstacles.
  • Identify opportunities and collaborate with engineers and suppliers to implement improvements (VAVE).
  • Lead and manage Veneer operations and procurement.
  • Lead the negotiation of agreements with assigned suppliers.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
  • Identify and solve broad problems that impact quality. You'll partner with the Operations, Customer Service, and HMPS Teams to ensure the identification of quality issues and their root causes, as well as to design and implement solutions.
  • Take responsibility for championing the continuous improvement processes of Operations by eliminating waste and creating processes that add 100% value to the customer.
  • Take responsibility for relationship management at assigned suppliers and successfully align suppliers' operating plans to achieve company objectives.
  • Take responsibility for targeting and setting annual cost savings goals.
  • Understand and apply formal project management principles to your work as appropriate. You will influence others to meet milestones and coordinate the work of others. You'll also lead cross-functional project teams.
  • Use market analysis to understand global influences to the supply base and create strategies to leverage these dynamics for the company's benefit.

You might be just who we’re looking for if you have...

  • A Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing/Operations Management or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of six years in a professional procurement role with exposure to wood veneer.
  • A minimum of three years of successful supervisory experience (including leading teams, salaried level employees, and multiple departments, as well as coaching skills) in manufacturing environment.
  • A working knowledge of all aspects of business operations, including Finance, Accounting, Legal, Manufacturing, Materials Management, Engineering, Quality, etc.
  • A demonstrated ability to do complex cost analysis and to apply HMPS thinking to the supplier process and value streams.
  • Demonstrated successful negotiation skills.
  • The ability to think and act quickly, creatively, and independently to resolve major supply disruptions affecting customers.
  • The ability to hold your ground when defending a sourcing issue with either internal or external people.
  • An expert ability to think strategically and execute tactically. You must also be financially literate and possess well-developed business acumen.
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively use the office automation, communication, software, and tools currently used in the company environment.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead, influence, solve problems, and work with all levels in the organization, including executive leadership.
  • An ability and willingness to travel up to 40 percent of the time, including international travel.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated professionalism.
