**Job Summary**

The Transportation Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Signals Design Engineer for immediate employment in the Burnaby, BC office. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established career in Electrical Engineering.

This individual would support the signaling practice in delivery of both large and small-scale signals projects primarily in Western Canada but at times in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and in the US as well. As the leader of the design team, the successful applicant will have multiple roles.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Team Leadership:

+ Primary role is to lead an existing team of 1-15 rail signals designers and technicians in various locations.

+ Assign work to staff

+ Monitor design team costs relative to established budgets

+ Attend and lead staff and client meetings

+ Support local managers in performing annual staff performance reviews for EIT’s and other signals staff

+ Coach staff on their careers and mentor EIT’s and other high-potential staff

+ Grow the team including participating in recruiting and interviewing candidates

+ Act as the designated signals/systems specialist on complex rail projects

+ Comply with, and implement, corporate safety, values and initiatives

Design for signaling systems on AECOM projects:

+ North American heavy-rail freight and passenger systems to AREMA C&S standards

+ LRT and Subway transit systems

+ Perform design, review, and checking (up to 3rd level) for:

+ New and modified vital circuitry and application logic programs for ABS, CTC, interlocking’s, and grade crossing warning systems

+ Review own work and work done by others for adherence to applicable standards, rules and regulations, as well as all applicable client standards and signal design policies and procedures

+ Coordinate signals design with systems (e.g. OCS/Traction power), power supply, and civil/track designs that are done by others

+ Prepare technical specifications for traditional design-bid-build and P3 / Alternative Design and Procurement / design-build projects

+ Perform hands-on design

+ Perform 3rd-level checks of designs completed by own staff

+ P.Eng sealing of own drawings for as-installed conditions

+ Give instructions and check work of other signals staff in other AECOM offices

Business Development:

+ Support proposal preparation and business development for AECOM’s signals/systems business

+ Estimate engineering effort (fees) and schedules for signals design assignment

**Minimum Requirements**

+ Bachelor’s degree in related field of engineering or equivalent

+ 10+ years of related work experience including extensive signaling design experience

+ Registration as a professional engineer is required. (P.Eng or PE in Canada or U.S.)

+ Experience delivering projects for commuter rail or freight rail Significant experience with AREMA-based heavy-rail signal design

+ In depth knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations pertaining to railroad and transit signal systems and highway-rail grade crossing warning systems. Must specifically include knowledge of AREMA C&S Recommended Practices, GCS, GCR, CROR, and industry standards

+ In-depth knowledge of a variety of essential signaling systems: ATC, CTC, ABS, PTC, ATS, CBTC, etc

+ Proficient at reading and interpreting Braking Analysis to provide correct aspects accordingly

+ Experience in grade crossing and vital microprocessor-based interlocking equipment programming

+ Proficient in highway grade crossing warning design, microprocessor-based constant warning time devices

+ Proficient in wayside signaling including ABS, CTC and Interlocking, both relay logic and Boolean or ladder logic

+ Experience with / working knowledge of both AutoCAD and MicroStation

+ Experience writing technical specifications

+ Experience undertaking design reviews

+ Competent written and verbal English skills

+ Must possess a valid driver's license

**Preferred Qualifications**

+ 15+ years of experience

+ Licenses to practice in multiple jurisdictions, including primarily BC, Alberta and Ontario

+ Ability to communicate in Spanish and/or French languages

+ Masters or PhD in rail signaling or similar (e.g. systems, integration, safety, automation, etc.)

+ P.Eng licensed in the Province of Ontario, Alberta and other jurisdictions

+ Experience with Metrolinx, TTC, CN, CP, VIA Rail, AMT or similar

+ Understanding of CN (GI’s & SCP’s) and CP (RP’s)

+ Experience with LRT and/or subway signaling Management or leadership experience

+ Experience delivering signals design and/or specifications for P3 / AFP / Design-Build (includes preparing PSOS and RCD documents)

+ In addition to office-based design, also experience with testing/commissioning, construction, maintenance, and/or operations Multi-disciplinary transit/rail “Systems” experience including traction-power, OCS, communications, power supply / electrical, SCADA, fare collection, etc

+ Experience in Systems Integration, Configuration Management, Requirements Engineering, Reliability / Accessibility / Maintenance / Safety (RAMS), etc

+ Experience writing proposals and experience in business development
