As a Graduate Urban Designer with a relevant urban design qualification, you will join our established London team to support senior urban design and planning staff in the production of masterplans, urban design guidance, planning strategies, design & access statements, capacity studies and other outputs in relation to strategic planning and urban design commissions for public and private sector clients.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of residential, mixed-use and regeneration masterplanning in a UK context. The Graduate Urban Designer will work closely with planning colleagues, so a good appreciation of the UK planning system and policy framework, as well as the current planning agenda and key issues, would be an advantage. With a strong appreciation of the links between people, place, the environment and the economy, the Graduate Urban Designer will often work alongside multi-disciplinary planning and technical teams on interesting assignments of all sizes, from neighbourhood plans, through large-scale residential-led masterplanning to regional and national strategies

Under the direction of senior staff, the Graduate Urban Designer will play a critical role in project design and development. The successful candidate will work within the DP&E Planning and Design team to provide technical expertise and support on a range design and planning projects. The role includes the application of landscape design, place-making, architecture, planning and urban design skills, as appropriate, along with project co-ordination responsibilities, from time to time.

The Graduate Urban Designer will work closely with senior staff, including the Project Manager of a particular project, to produce and refine reports and product in accordance with the project scope. The Graduate Urban Designer must be flexible and able to work both independently and within the team, often within tight timeframes.

As a key member of the team, the Graduate Urban Designer shall actively and positively contribute to the overall running of the team on a daily basis. This includes participation in team meetings and any other initiatives that are agreed by the leadership team.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with the allocated Project Manager to produce project reports, drawings, and other documents to meet client deadlines as outlined by the PM;

  • Apply computer skills in a range of packages including CAD, Adobe Creative Suite and other software, as required;

  • Develop design solutions and strategies for a range of projects encompassing residential, mixed use, commercial and industrial masterplanning commissions;

  • Assist in the preparation of feasibility, design, planning and other documentation, as required, including contributing to the preparation of submissions and fee proposals;

  • Participate in design workshops with clients and staff as appropriate to the projects;

  • Liaise with clients in accordance with the project requirements and as agreed by the PM;

  • Work harmoniously in the team environment, practicing open communication, a participative approach to work and commitment to projects;

  • Work with other AECOM offices from time to time to assist in projects as well as gain experience across different disciplines;

  • Participate in the appropriate practice circles, information sharing and firm wide programs, as required;

  • Implement and use AECOMs QA system for all project work, maintain and refine in-house design standards, procedures and policies, and

  • Contribute to the team environment, practicing open communication, a participative approach to meetings and work and commitment to projects.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelors/Masters degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Design or Urban Planning

  • Post-graduate qualifications in any of the subjects listed above will be acceptable, in addition to the candidates first degree, dependent on experience, skill sets and interview.

  • Good working knowledge of current urban design issues in a UK context;

  • Competence in the use of the full range of designfocused packages including AutoCad, the full Adobe Creative Suite and 3D packages, including SketchUp, Rhino, etc., as well as Microsoft Office suite; Confidence and competence in drawing and sketching by hand;

  • The ability to work in a consultancy environment, with a strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, ability to work independently and show initiative and successfully manage time to meet project deadlines;

  • The ability to be able to work under close direction from senior colleagues as a key member of a multidisciplinary team, and

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Candidates must provide a portfolio or a selection of their design and graphic work, in addition to their CV.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post graduate relevant work experience would be advantageous
