The Director of Safety and Occupational Health is a staff function within the Office of the Chief Operating Officer.  The primary emphasis of the position is to develop and manage a Safety and Occupational Health (Safety) Program designed to eliminate or minimize the effects of hazards encountered in the administration, operation, maintenance, and construction of WAPA’s complex electrical transmission and power marketing facilities.



The Director of Safety and Occupational Health monitors and interprets applicable safety regulations and ensures WAPA’s safety and occupational health program complies with regulatory and departmental requirements.  Directs efforts to control hazardous work conditions in support of workforce efforts to accomplish WAPA's mission.  Monitors and updates WAPA’s safety program based on industry changes and best practices.    Utilizes data-driven evaluation and metrics to measure safety program effectiveness and adapt as needed.



A qualified candidates resume must reflect experience leading or managing (i.e., Influence, motivate, and challenge others) a team of professionals involved in safety and occupational health in a high voltage (69kV or higher) utility organization.  Examples of experience could include:

  • Researching and developing new safety and occupational health standards/policies.
  • Evaluating and developing metrics to measure safety program effectiveness.
  • Recommending safety and occupational health policy to higher levels of management. 
  • Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. 
  • Developing or implementing programs to reduce the frequency, severity, and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses.
